Everyone knows the Met, the MoMA, the Guggenheim. Probably not as many know the Museum at FIT, aka Fashion Institute of Technology on Seventh Avenue and 27th Street. Founded in 1967, the museum owns a collection of over 50,000 garments, textiles and accessories relating to fashion from the 18th century to present. Free exhibitions run throughout the year, some of which focus on individual designers, others which examine fashion trends throughout history. Whatever the focus, the museum illustrates fashion, not only as a luxury in modern life but as a storyteller of cultures and world events throughout the ages. Next up– Isabel Toledo: Fashion From the Inside Out. (In case you didn’t know, it was Ms. Toledo who designed First Lady Obama’s ensemble at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration).
