Day 17: Chill Session in Times Square

In NYC, NYC for free, Summer 2009, things to do in NYC, Times Square on June 17, 2009 at 10:24 pm

Beach chairs in Times Square seem about as appropriate as flip flops at Carnegie Hall…until now. As part of the what is known as Green Light for Midtown, the city’s effort to reduce traffic congestion in Herald and Times Squares, sections of Broadway have been closed off to traffic, thus creating open space for pedestrians to walk, and now sit and chill in the middle of the street. At first glance it seems a little strange– the green, blue and hot pink PVC chairs in clusters on the pavement– but then again Times Square is all about bright, flashy colors and craziness. The chairs are scheduled for replacement at the end of the summer, so if you happen to be in that neck of the woods, work in a few extra minutes to take a break…in a beach chair under the lights.
