Day 31: Chelsea Gallery Tour

In Chelsea, NYC, NYC Art Galleries, NYC for free, things to do in NYC on July 1, 2009 at 11:57 pm

The tranquil streets of the far west 20s, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, though such a stretch from the typical chaos of Manhattan—that is, as everyone knows, a hub of art and culture—are the perfect setting for art in all its many forms. Lining the streets are literally hundreds of art galleries that on any day of the week save Sunday and Monday are open for public viewing. Whether it’s quiet contemplation or visual stimulation that you are seeking, it is here that you must go. From photography—both historical and present-day—to drawing, painting and sculpture, the pristine white walls and raw, concrete floors characteristic to most all of the Chelsea galleries, hold works by some of the greatest artists of the past century and today. Head west until just before the river and wander aimlessly. Feel inspired and enlightened and simply, the closest you may ever get to art in its purest form.
