Day 45: Early Morning at Bethesda Fountain

In Central Park, NYC, NYC for free, NYC Parks, things to do in NYC on July 15, 2009 at 11:58 pm

There are few times and few places in New York when you can find that a moment is all your own; when there’s not another person around, when stillness is felt more than the typical buzzing energy. For a break from the noise and crowded sidewalks, take an early morning walk through Central Park to Bethesda Fountain which stands in the center of Bethesda Terrace, mid-park off 72nd Street. The 8-foot bronze sculpture, known as the Angel of the Waters, was commissioned by Emma Stebbins and has stood, with lily in hand, blessing the water since 1873. As a popular place in Central Park where crowds gather, the fountain sees thousands of visitors on any given day. But early in the morning, before the city comes to life, when the sun is just beginning its ascent, there is nothing more peaceful.
