Day 47: Socrates Sculpture Park

In Long Island City, NYC, NYC Art Galleries, NYC for free, NYC Parks, Sculpture Parks, things to do in NYC on July 17, 2009 at 11:57 pm

On a block of land at the edge of Long Island City, a green grass lot colors the surrounding industrial neighborhood. A grand gate stands at the corner of Broadway and Vernon Boulevard, eliciting the question from curious passers-by: What lies beyond? It is Socrates Sculpture Park, New York’s only site dedicated solely to the creation and exhibition of large scale public works; an outdoor museum of sorts. Just at the water’s edge, the Manhattan skyline rests quietly in the distance westward, serving as a perfect backdrop for sunny days when families gather to walk amongst the art, children play and dogs run in the open grass. Open 365 days a year from 10am until sunset, the park runs ongoing exhibitions, along with scheduled events and programs which include pilates workouts, movies at sunset and art-making workshops, all of it for free. Take an hour or take a day and trek on over for an what is truly a different museum experience, where nature has as big a role as the art itself.
