Day 82: Bloomingdales Shopping Day

In NYC, NYC Shopping, things to do in NYC on August 21, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Long before Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha ever arrived on the scene, it’s been a known fact that one of New York City’s greatest pastimes is shopping. Every neighborhood from the Upper West Side to Nolita has their own cluster of one-of-a-kind boutiques, but on a day when the temperatures are hovering in the 90s the last thing you want to be doing is traipsing around, in and out of the heat. So what’s one to do in such a conundrum? Head to Bloomies! Founded in 1872 by a pair of brothers by the very name, Bloomingdales started as the ‘East Side Bazaar’ on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and today is one of the city’s best known department stores. From its Art Deco design, its façade of international flags, seven-and-a-half floors of glamorous goods and those famous brown bags, it’s a city block of shopping fun, even in recessionary times. Wander through designer collections and admire pieces you might never buy, but will think extraordinary to see up close. Get lost in the jeans department, shoe department or any other for that matter—the departments in the flagship store on 59th Street are vast in comparison to those back in your hometown Bloomingdales. Even a visit to the accessories counter is a hoot, where ladies sit you down and string beads around your neck, dressing you up like a doll. Visit to Bloomies, certainly a New York City must.
